Calling

This is a page for those who have said 'YES' to Jesus, or who feel ready to say 'YES' to Jesus.

Many people grow to adulthood with a 'calling' - a vocation or a strong desire to pursue a certain career or way of life. For instance, it may be aiming to be a doctor or surgeon, or to study subjects like geology or marine biology for the purpose of understanding our planet and looking after God's creation. In Genesis He said 'I am putting you in charge of the fish, the birds, and all the wild animals'.

There are two kinds of calling in the Bible. First we are called to worship God alone, and no other, and to believe the good news of salvation won by the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus told His disciples 'Whoever has seen me has seen the Father' (John chapter 14 verse 9). God calls us to faithful worship and belief, to repentance of our sins, and He gives us the 'gift of the Holy Spirit' to use for our specific calling, both to worship Him as the true God and witness to others to bring them to Christ.

The second type of calling is for believers to have a lifelong responsibility for renewing the world, flawed since the time of Adam. We are called to be stewards, or managers, of the Kingdom and we must always show mercy and work for justice in the world. Believers are also called to live honestly and demonstrate the 'fruits of the Spirit'. Galations chapter 5 verses 22-23 says they 'produce love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility and self-control'. Even under duress and in difficult circumstances we must have total trust in Christ as Lord and 'run the race set before us'. Power and money are not important; the prize is the blessing of the free gift of 'the water of life'. Jesus said 'Whoever is thirsty should come to me and whoever believes in me should drink'. As our physical bodies have many parts for different functions, so we are all 'one body' in union with Christ, and all joined to each other as 'brothers and sisters in Christ'. We are to use our various God-given gifts and talents in accordance with God's wishes and direction. We can serve in different ways, teach, encourage others, work hard, share with others, and show kindness and compassion.

Ephesians chapter 2 verses 8-9: 'For it is by God's grace that you have been saved through faith. It is not the result of your own efforts, but God's gift, so that no-one can boast about it'.
James chapter 2 verse 26: 'So then, as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without actions is dead'.

These two passages seem to contradict each other, but it means that when people are saved - born again from above - they should be inspired and excited, through their gratitude, to save souls as they have been saved, help other people who don't know Jesus as Lord, and pray for them. This gives God all the glory. But we can't add anything to the finished work of Christ on the Cross - the ultimate sacrifice.
