Lights in the Darkness

From my window I watched a neighbour's firework display. Silvery white, yellow, red and emerald green sparks and lights exploded high into the night sky. I'm not usually very keen on fireworks, thinking as I do of how scared people's pet cats and dogs, and all the birds around, must be of the bangs. But this was twenty minutes of spectacular beauty. It suddenly made me remember the words of Jesus (in John chapter 8 verse 12): "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will have the light of life and will never walk in darkness". Yes, if you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and in His death and resurrection, you will live forever with Him in heaven.

All we Christians are called to be LIGHTS, bright as a candle flame, vivid as a starburst of fireworks. In Matthew chapter 5 verses 14 to 16 Jesus says "You are like light for the whole world. No-one lights a lamp and puts it under a bowl; instead he puts it on a lampstand, where it gives light for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine before people, so that they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven". We must be SHINY! In Psalm 119 verse 105 we read "Your word is a lamp to guide me and a light for my path".

Lights also represent comfort and safety. A walk home along a good road with street lights is better than dark lanes and alleyways. The flames of a fire can certainly be very dangerous, but fire also gives us brightness to see by, warmth, and a means to cook food. Wild animals which could harm us are frightened of it and keep well away. Think of the sparks that rise from the small wood fire we may have made as little words and deeds of Christian love. Each has the possibility of "igniting" understanding and belief in another person. Then they in turn may create their own "sparks"! The Holy Spirit of God will be with us, and them, every step of the way.

John chapter 1 verses 4 and 5: "The Word (Jesus) was the source of life, and this life brought light to humanity. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has never put it out".
